I started this blog on my birthday in 2020 and I think of it as something of a tradition to post on my birthday, though when I look back at the blog it is a tradition perhaps more honored in the breach.
I turn 56 today and I wanted to share some joy with you as we see how complete the Republican rout was last night. In Texas, Talarico beat Paxton like a drum. In Michigan, El-Sayed smoked Rogers by the seven points he predicted. Five governors flipped, including Texas. The political balance in the South seems like it has been rewritten. In Colorado, the competitive races are too close to call but the Democratic candidate is leading in my very Republican House district, and Boebert is currently behind in the count in that race.

Over on the left wing echo chamber, our mood was high as we gave ourselves permission for one night to believe that Democrats could actually make a difference somehow. The post above is 100% correct. The image below was sent to me by my mother, who is in her 80s, grandmother of two, someone I hardly ever heard curse when I was growing up, a Nixon voter, and now a passionate Trump hater.

Mine too, Piglet, mine too.

These are two of the posters I have made in recent years, currently hanging in my dining room. I was thinking of what I would like to see the Democrats do, after they replace Jeffries and Schumer. This is a partial list, no particular order, completely serious, but also I know that perhaps none of it will happen.
- Release everyone from ICE custody or deportation, pay them reparations, and fast-track them to citizenship.
- File charges, hold hearings, impeach. Start with Kushner, work your way up. Include everyone in Trump’s cabinet and his orbit.
- Codify trans rights as human rights.
- Nationalize Musk’s companies.
- Make prediction markets and online sports betting illegal.
- Regulate consumer AI out of existence.
So yeah, that’s what I’ll be calling my 🤞new Democratic representative🤞to demand soon.
I hope you all have a happy Steve’s birthday! More posts soon, probably, maybe, hopefully, I promise.
